More recently, I have built up a list of contacts and am quite active in the industry with networking events. I got my first job by writing letters and visiting sites asking for work. As a planner this is something that comes with a mix of on-site experience, and on the job software training in Powerproject, Primavera, Microsoft project, and BIM software like Navisworks (Manage). This qualification involved a sandwich year out which got me more interested in an engineering & management role. When I joined the industry I had just gained my Building Engineering & Management degree, passing with honours. I chose to stay in planning as I found the variety of work from prequals, to tenders, to live projects hugely rewarding and enjoyable with a better work life balance.ĭid you need any qualifications or training to get into your role? After this project was completed, I had an opportunity to have training in the planning and buying department. I progressed over 7 years to become site manager, allocated to the Heathrow World Cargo Centre. I began my career as a site engineer, working at the Coombe Abbey Hotel project in Coventry. Why did you want to become a Senior Construction Planner?
